This contemporary-style renovation uses feature steel to let in an abundance of sunlight, providing free flowing open spaces making a strong connection to the outdoors
Designed for a young family, this project involved adding a living room, dining room, kitchen, rumpus, new bathroom and laundry to the rear of a typical pre-war home in Sydney's eastern suburbs.
The new extension contrasts with the existing brick and tile residence. Exposed structural steel, glass, aluminium and steel roofing create a contemporary lightweight enclosure that opens to the new pool and deck.
An open plan kitchen/dining/living area sits within a skillion roofed extension. CaesarStone bench tops and spray-finished polyurethane cupboards feature in the kitchen along with a painted glass splash back and stainless steel appliances.
On two sides of this space bifold aluminium doors fold back to let in an abundance of sunshine, creating a free flowing area with a strong connection to the outdoors.
Large spans of steel over the extension rely on a single corner angle column as support. This minimal sizing is achieved through the strength of the steel. A wall of glass opens this area to the outside living and pool. Here, the deck features uplights and pool lighting which help define the area’s two functions; as a dining/living area, then by opening the doors, as one large entertaining area.

A highlight window is set in the steel to conserve the winter sun and minimise the summer sun. Pivot doors dispenses the need for doorjambs, allowing the architectural lines to flow through uninterrupted.

We put a lot of thought into what we are doing to eliminate any large problems before they occur, the only difficulty in this site was the mains sewer running through the backyard, therefore the pool and decking had to be designed around this.
The steel was used in the right way, enabling us to have large spans with minimal sizing because of it’s strength. The steel was used in the right way, enabling us to have large spans with minimal sizing because of it’s strength.
